ICE is Operating Outside the Law and Congress Must Act Now

To: Sen. Peters, Rep. Barrett, Sen. Slotkin

From: A constituent in Hartland, MI

April 22

I’m writing to express my deep alarm at the escalating abuses being carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Each day brings new, horrifying reports of illegal deportations—including of American citizens, minors, and other individuals who are clearly protected under the law. ICE is acting with blatant disregard for constitutional rights and legal due process, and this cannot be allowed to continue. This is not just a legal crisis, it is a moral one. Our government is forcibly removing people who have every right to be here, often without access to legal representation, transparency, or basic human dignity. The fact that even American-born children are being swept up in this chaos should deeply disturb every member of Congress. I’m calling on you to fulfill your constitutional duty to provide oversight and accountability. ICE must be held to the rule of law. Congress has the power to conduct investigations, impose restrictions, and defund agencies that refuse to operate within the bounds of legality and humanity. You must act. And with the urgency this escalation in lawbreaking warrants. This is not about politics, it’s about human rights, the rule of law, and the very soul of our democracy.
