Fiscally irresponsible tax-and-spend bill must be reconsidered

The proposed "big, beautiful" tax-and-spending bill would add a staggering $2.5 trillion or more to the national debt over the next decade, according to nonpartisan estimates. While proponents claim it will save $1.6 trillion, these purported savings are widely disputed by fiscal watchdogs who argue the steep tax cuts of $3.8 trillion are inadequately offset by relatively modest spending reductions. The bill disproportionately burdens low- and middle-income Americans through cuts to programs like Medicaid, food stamps, and clean energy subsidies, while affluent individuals stand to gain significantly from the tax cuts. Concerns have been raised by Republican fiscal hawks that the spending cuts are insufficient to meaningfully address the ballooning deficits projected to reach up to $3.3 trillion annually under this legislation. Given the substantial increase to the already historic $36.8 trillion national debt, as well as the inequitable distribution of costs, I urge reconsideration of this fiscally irresponsible and regressive proposal in favor of a more balanced approach that does not mortgage our future for unsustainable tax breaks.
