Pennsylvania Must Lead on Special Education

To: Sen. Cappelletti, Rep. Briggs, Gov. Shapiro

From: A constituent in Wayne, PA

June 28

As a Pennsylvania constituent, I urge you to protect and strengthen special education in our Commonwealth. Regardless of what happens at the federal level, Pennsylvania must continue to treat IDEA as an education law rooted in educational expertise, accountability, and the civil rights of students with disabilities. Too many families already struggle to obtain appropriate services despite the protections guaranteed under IDEA. Pennsylvania should lead by improving accountability, ensuring timely evaluations and services, strengthening enforcement, reducing unnecessary conflict, and supporting schools in providing effective educational programs. Students with disabilities deserve more than compliance—they deserve meaningful access to a high-quality education. Please make strengthening special education a priority for Pennsylvania.
