I am writing to you as a constituent, a parent, and someone who believes deeply in our collective responsibility to protect children.
I am deeply disturbed by reports of a two-year-old child, Kaleth, being detained at the Dilley facility under conditions that are both inhumane and dangerous. A toddler who is ill, refusing food due to unsafe conditions, and reportedly denied appropriate medical care is not a policy issue — it is a moral failure.
No child should be imprisoned. No child should suffer from preventable illness while in government custody. And no parent should be dismissed when asking for medical care for their sick child.
I am asking you to take immediate action to:
• Ensure Kaleth receives proper, independent medical care without delay
• Advocate for the immediate release of Kaleth and his mother, Joani
• Oppose the continued detention of children and families in facilities like Dilley
• Investigate the role of private corporations profiting from the detention of children
The expansion of family detention facilities and the financial incentives tied to incarceration raise serious ethical concerns. We have seen in our own history the consequences of policies driven by fear, profit, and dehumanization. We cannot repeat those mistakes.
This is not about politics — it is about basic human decency and the protection of children.
I urge you to act swiftly and publicly on this matter.
