Native individuals experience food insecurity at higher rates than any group in America.
Native people living on reservations are often far from grocery stores, and they are forced to spend Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) dollars on the processed food available at nearby gas stations or convenience stores. Food can cost much more than what it would cost in urban areas.
In times of crisis, tribal citizens look to their tribal governments for assistance. Please pass a strong farm bill that respects Native sovereignty by:
- Allowing tribal governments the flexibility to administer federal nutrition programs like The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and SNAP as decided by the tribe.
- Allowing people receiving SNAP benefits to also receive Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) benefits.
Thank you.
