Urge Action to Prevent ACA Subsidy Expiration and Premium Increases

To: Sen. Moreno, Pres. Trump, Rep. Balderson, Sen. Husted

December 16

I am writing to express serious concern about the inadequacy of the Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act and the looming expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies. With only five days remaining before Congress adjourns for the holidays, 22 million Americans face the prospect of their health insurance premiums doubling on average. The current proposal from Speaker Mike Johnson fails to address this immediate crisis. The bill is a narrow collection of previously supported Republican policies that neither extends the expiring subsidies nor offers any alternative to prevent the rapidly approaching spike in health care costs. This is not a theoretical problem. Real people in your district will see their premiums double if Congress fails to act before adjournment. I understand that Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick has proposed a bipartisan amendment that would extend subsidies for two years. This represents a practical solution that acknowledges the political and human reality of this situation. Moderate Republicans in swing districts recognize that allowing subsidies to expire would be politically disastrous in the 2026 midterms, but more importantly, it would be devastating for millions of families who depend on affordable coverage. House Democrats have united behind a three-year extension for subsidies. While I support a longer extension, even the two-year Fitzpatrick amendment would provide critical relief and prevent an immediate catastrophe. The alternative is allowing premiums to double for 22 million Americans while promising to spend the first half of 2026 working on health care policy with no clear plan. I urge you to support any amendment that extends ACA subsidies and to oppose the current bill if it fails to address this crisis. People struggling to afford coverage cannot wait for vague future policy discussions. They need action before Congress adjourns.
