Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) like Flock and Axon are taking over our neighborhoods, tracking our movements, and building detailed databases on all of us. It doesn't matter which company's cameras are watching; they all share the same problems: no transparency, no oversight, and no accountability for how our data is collected, stored, or misused – all of which means no privacy. As your constituent, I'm urging you to act. You have the power to protect us from mass surveillance, and that starts with passing legislation to get rid of this dystopian technology. The best privacy protection is to ban ALPR use altogether. At minimum, Congress must pass legislation to: - Ban the federal government from purchasing or using ALPRs, and ban the use of federal funds for anyone else to purchase or use ALPRs. - Prohibit any government entity from sharing, purchasing, receiving, or using any ALPR-obtained data anywhere without a warrant (and only for felony crimes recognized under both federal and state law). - Require data to be deleted within hours at most. - Impose gold-standard consumer privacy protections, such as end-to-end encryption, data minimization, informed consent, ban on sale and most transfers of data, and a right to see our own data and correct errors. - Include reporting requirements and strict limits on data access to prevent misuse and abuse. Each day these cameras remain active, they violate our right to privacy and harm our ability to live and travel free from pervasive government surveillance. Get rid of the cameras now and protect us from future violations. The time to act is now.
