An Open Letter

To: Gov. Mills, Sen. Reny, Rep. Crafts

From: A constituent in Damariscotta, ME

April 17

Trans sports bands hurt all Maine Kids. Bullying and intimidation, these are not acceptable behavior on the playing field and certainly not from the federal government. The anti-trans bills before the Maine legislature are bullying and intimidation of children. This legislation will subject every girl, whether they are trans or not, to being questioned about their sex assigned at birth. Enforcement of the law involves invasive and harmful tests and examinations. Do we really want our children to be subject to examinations of their genitals so they can play sports? It is part of a larger push to police the bodies of women, trans people, and other gender expansive people. These bills are aimed to further erase trans people from the US. They deny trans people of their civil rights. This is a roll back of progress made over the past decades toward a more just and equitable society. Trans people are one of the first targets. Women, people of color, disabled people, queer people, any one who disagrees with the federal government, all will be targeted. Its up to you to stop this now. To give an inch and take away the rights of trans athletes will embolden them to take more from other people. Don’t legislate hate.
