Texas has already shown how badly its system can fail women. Now the state has pushed its maternal mortality report past the election and will not review deaths from 2022 and 2023, the first full years under the abortion ban. That is exactly the period the public most needs examined. When laws make doctors afraid to act, pregnant women can be left in dangerous situations, and the only way to know how often that happened is to look at the cases. If the findings vindicated these laws, state leaders would release them proudly. Delaying the report and leaving those deaths unreviewed suggests they fear what the numbers will show. It tells women that protecting political power matters more than understanding why they died. Every official who allows this delay owns it. Release the report now, and review the deaths the committee left out. Texas women deserve real care, real answers, and a government that doesn't bury evidence about their lives.
