The government can't bully anyone into silencing the ideas it doesn't like. That's a fundamental principle of the First Amendment and a cornerstone of our democracy. But time and time again, the government has abused its authority to do just that. I'm urging you to co-sponsor the bipartisan JAWBONE Act to prevent another unconstitutional attack on our freedom of speech. Across both Democratic and Republican administrations, we've seen government officials attempt to coerce private actors to censor speech they disagree with. They've pressured social media platforms to change content moderation policies or remove particular posts. They've threatened broadcaster licenses to get shows they don't like off the air.
These attacks are dangerous attempts to punish speech the government disagrees with and restrict what perspectives the public gets to hear. And the systems that allowed these attacks remain – which is why we need the JAWBONE Act. The government should not be allowed to control the media and censor viewpoints it disagrees with. The bipartisan JAWBONE Act creates safeguards we need. I urge you to co-sponsor it and do everything in your power to pass it immediately.
