Vote Against the KIDS Act (H.R.7757): Protect Privacy and Free Speech Online

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer

From: A verified voter in Syracuse, NY

October 20

I'm writing to ask that you vote against the KIDS Act (H.R.7757) when it reaches the Senate floor. This bill bundles together a dozen child-safety measures—including a version of KOSA, the SCREEN Act, and other provisions—but the real concern is how it pushes platforms toward universal age verification. Even though the House version claims it doesn't require age checks, the legal obligations it imposes create pressure for services to know whether users are under 17. Smaller companies and startups won't risk lawsuits; they'll verify everyone's age to stay compliant. The ACLU and EFF have raised strong objections here. As the ACLU put it, this bill would "threaten free speech for people of all ages and put our data at risk." No one should have to hand over ID or biometric information just to access lawful online content. And the consequences aren't theoretical—we already know these surveillance systems collect and store sensitive data that becomes a target for breaches and misuse. What worries me most is the chilling effect. The bill's broad definitions of harm mean platforms might remove content about mental health, addiction recovery, or LGBTQ+ support to avoid liability. Young people seeking help could be locked out of exactly the resources they need. That's not protection—that's censorship disguised as safety. I understand the intent behind this legislation. Nobody wants kids harmed online. But this approach trades fundamental rights for the promise of safety, and it doesn't actually make children any safer. We can protect young people without building a surveillance infrastructure that hurts everyone. Please vote no on the KIDS Act. Thank you for your consideration.
