I’m writing as a concerned constituent from Atlanta, GA to urge you to oppose any provisions in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (BBB) that would authorize the sale of public lands, including millions of acres managed by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.
Recent language in the Senate’s BBB reconciliation bill would:
• Force the sale of 2 to 3 million acres of federal lands across multiple Western states.
• Make up to 250 million acres eligible for disposal—without meaningful public input or environmental review.
• Allow land sales to be used for private development, not guaranteed affordable housing or conservation.
This proposal poses serious threats to:
1. Public access and recreation. Generations of Americans value these lands for hiking, hunting, fishing, and exploring.
2. Wildlife & ecosystems. These areas support vital habitats and biodiversity.
3. Local economies. Tourism and outdoor recreation generate billions—something that reckless land sales could jeopardize.
Governors from both parties—including those of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming—have publicly rejected this land sell-off, emphasizing that public lands belong to all of us.
Even members of Congress who support parts of the BBB have opposed the land-sale provision and worked to remove similar language in other versions.
Please stand with them by:
• Opposing the land-sale provisions in the BBB,
• Supporting amendments that strike or limit the forced divestiture of public lands, and
• Ensuring transparent, inclusive processes for any proposed land reforms—grounded in public need, tribal consultations, and conservation.
Our public lands are a legacy—not a budget line item. Once they’re gone, we never get them back. As your constituent, I urge you to protect these shared resources and preserve them for generations to come.
Thank you for your service and consideration.
