Stand Firm Against Harmful Demands in Budget Negotiations

To: Rep. Ogles, Sen. Blackburn, Sen. Hagerty

From: A constituent in Culleoka, TN

October 1, 2025

As we approach a potential government shutdown, I urge you to stand firm against harmful demands from Republicans and former President Trump. Their recent statements and proposed policies are deeply concerning and go against our nation's values and the welfare of our military personnel. At a recent address to senior military leaders in Quantico, Virginia, Trump suggested using "dangerous cities as training grounds" for the military and National Guard. This proposal is not only unethical but could potentially endanger both our service members and civilians. Furthermore, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's announced plans to overhaul military policies are equally alarming. His intention to end diversity efforts and allow drill sergeants to "put their hands on recruits" would be a significant step backward for our armed forces. The threat to shut down the government unless these demands are met is nothing short of political blackmail. I believe it is crucial that we do not cave to these pressure tactics. A government shutdown, while disruptive, may be necessary to prevent the implementation of these dangerous and regressive policies. It's worth noting that public opinion is not on the side of those pushing for a shutdown. Recent polling shows that the majority of Americans would blame Republicans and Trump for a government shutdown, not the Democrats. I understand the complexity of budget negotiations, but I implore you to prioritize the long-term health of our democracy and the welfare of our service members over short-term political expediency. Stand strong, call their bluff, and show that we will not be coerced into accepting policies that go against our values and the best interests of our nation. Time is of the essence, with the shutdown deadline looming at midnight. Your immediate action and unwavering stance on this issue are crucial. Please do everything in your power to protect our institutions and resist these harmful demands, even if it means allowing a temporary government shutdown. The integrity of our democracy and the future of our military depend on your resolve.
