I am writing as your constituent in regards to the inhumane and negligent treatment of 2-month-old Juan Nicolás and his family at the ICE Detention Center in Dilley, TX, run by CoreCivic. The family, including Juan Nicolás and his older, 16-month-old infant sister, was detained at Dilley for more than 3 weeks, in excess of the 20-day maximum proscribed in the Flores Settlement. During that time the newborn became very sick due to the unsanitary conditions. His mother reported, for days, that her son was sick. But nothing was done as his condition worsened and he began to have severe respiratory issues, and was vomiting and choking on it. Finally, just a few hours ago, the baby was taken to a local hospital where he was dignosed with Bronchitis. While he was there he became unresponsive. But, unbelievably, the baby was discharged, just after 12am, back into ICE custody to be returned to the deplorable conditions at the Dilley detention center. Even worse, the family was then "deported" by being dropped at the Mexican border with nothing but the clothes on their backs and about $190 in cash, the amount that was in their commissary account. No transportation to the nearest hospital, none of their belongings returned - including their phones. With a tiny newborn fighting for his life against a potentually deadly infection acquired due to the negligence of CoreCivic and their staff. If that baby dies, his death will be the direct result of ICE, Customs & Border Patrol, and their contractor CoreCivic. I hope you will assist the family in holding accountable everyone involved in the cruelty and negligence inflicted on Juan Nicolás and his family. I also need to know what you are doing to shut down facilities like the concentration camp labled as a "detention center" in Dilley, TX, to mandate the children currently held in immigrarion detention facilities be released, to prevent future detentions of children in ICE- or CBP- contracted private prisona, and to prevent any further warehouses being used to imprison people, especially families and children? I look forward to your response.
