Hold Industry Accountable: Restore Integrity and Strong Oversight to the CFPB
Recent reporting reveals how the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s leadership has abandoned its core mandate. Acting Director Russell Vought replaced rigorous enforcement with a voluntary "ask-nicely" policy, leaving American consumers entirely unprotected.
The consequences of this passive posture are already clear. When fintech startup Bilt botched a major transition—leaving consumers with erroneous charges, frozen accounts, and tanked credit scores—the bureau took the company’s word that issues were resolved rather than conducting a full investigation. Weeks later, Bilt failed its customers again, while the CFPB remained silent. Industry-friendly deregulation is not consumer protection.
The CFPB was created to safeguard hardworking Americans from predatory practices and systemic failure, not to provide public relations cover for corporate missteps. A regulatory body relying on voluntary corporate compliance surrenders its authority and betrays public trust.
Remove Russell Vought and reject any leadership nominees who endorse this passive strategy. Compel the CFPB to return to active supervision, mandatory compliance checks, and real enforcement. American consumers deserve a watchdog with teeth—not a passive partner to financial institutions.
