I write today to express my opposition to the Stopping Harmful Content Reaching Everyone on Every Network (SCREEN) Act. This legislation raises serious civil liberties concerns that outweigh its stated benefits. The SCREEN Act would require platforms to implement broad content filtering mechanisms, effectively mandating automated censorship of user-generated content. Such systems are notoriously imprecise they routinely suppress legitimate speech, including political commentary, journalism, health information, and artistic expression while often failing to catch the harmful content they target. Placing the government in the role of defining what content must be filtered sets a dangerous precedent for state-directed censorship of the internet. I urge you to vote against the SCREEN Act and to champion approaches that respect both child safety and the First Amendment rights of all Americans.
