I’m writing because I’m deeply concerned about the administration’s recent decision to weaken the Endangered Species Act, particularly the change to the definition of “harm.” Removing protections for critical habitat makes it much easier for logging, mining, and oil development to move into areas that endangered wildlife depend on to survive. Even if an animal isn’t killed directly, destroying the places where it feeds, breeds, and raises its young has the same result over time. I’m also troubled by the decision to use the “God Squad” committee to allow exemptions for oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. These actions send the message that short-term economic interests are more important than protecting the natural resources and wildlife that belong to all Americans. Habitat loss is one of the biggest reasons species become endangered or disappear altogether. The Endangered Species Act has an impressive record of success, helping bring species like the bald eagle and grizzly bear back from the brink. It has worked for more than fifty years because it recognizes that protecting habitat is just as important as protecting the animals themselves. I respectfully ask that you do everything you can to defend the Endangered Species Act and oppose efforts to weaken it. Please support legislation and oversight that restores its full protections so future generations can inherit the same wildlife and wild places that we have been fortunate enough to enjoy.
