I am writing to you in response to the recent letter from dozens of U.S. doctors who volunteered in Gaza, pleading for an end to the suffering and devastation they witnessed firsthand. The doctors’ accounts, detailing “relentless bombings and shelling” and “the indescribable horror experienced by innocent civilians,” illustrate the catastrophic toll on Gaza’s population and serve as a powerful call for immediate U.S. intervention. The doctors, who saw the crisis unfold up close, describe scenes that “no medical training could prepare us for.” They recount operating in dire conditions, with “shortages of everything from gauze to surgical tools.” Medical facilities were left with little power, the doctors noted, and children who had lost their families were left “dying on tables” with no safe place to recover. Their experiences reveal the absolute urgency for the U.S. to halt military aid to Israel and to instead work toward an immediate ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian aid. One doctor shared, “I have treated children who have been pulled from the rubble multiple times, only to return to bombed homes.” They described seeing families torn apart, with parents clinging to injured children, hoping for miracles in operating rooms that had been reduced to scenes of chaos by the lack of resources. These are not isolated incidents but an ongoing reality in Gaza. Every day that U.S. support enables Israel’s continued assault, these tragedies mount. As these doctors stressed in their letter, “providing aid to those who would inflict such suffering makes the U.S. government morally complicit.” The situation demands action from U.S. leaders who can stand against a policy that allows the indiscriminate killing and wounding of civilians, including thousands of children. It is imperative that the United States ends its military support for this crisis and urgently calls for a ceasefire and protection of civilians. I urge you to heed the voices of those who have witnessed the devastation in Gaza and to push for an immediate cessation of U.S. military aid to Israel. Standing by in silence is a decision to enable the destruction and suffering of an entire population. The world is watching, and so are your constituents, who demand a foreign policy that upholds humanity, not support for genocide.
