With 40% of local NWS forecasting offices facing significant staff shortages, and over 10% of employees having left recently, crucial predictive measures like weather balloon deployment and Doppler radar operations have been compromised. As we brace for the upcoming hurricane season, these capacity issues raise grave concerns about the nation's ability to effectively respond to extreme weather events. Time is of the essence when it comes to disaster preparedness, and the scientists at NOAA and NWS are dedicated to providing the lead time necessary for communities and first responders to take protective action. However, their ability to fulfill this critical mission is being undermined by the current staffing crisis.
