An Open Letter

To: Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Scholten, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Grand Rapids, MI

September 2

Subject: Cease all complicity: Israeli plans for forced expulsion in Gaza and the collapse of Democratic credibility I am writing as a constituent in Grand Rapids to demand your immediate, public, and unequivocal condemnation of today’s reports confirming that the Israeli government is actively seeking the Trump administration’s approval and operational backing to forcibly expel Palestinians from Gaza. Israeli War Minister Israel Katz stated openly today that the military is prepared to carry out mass expulsions by air and sea under the grotesque euphemism of "voluntary migration," explicitly acknowledging that the execution of this ethnic cleansing operation hinges on a political green light from Washington. Let us dispense with euphemisms: engineering conditions of total unlivability, starving a population, destroying municipal and residential infrastructure, and then corralling survivors onto transport to third countries is not migration—it is the textbook definition of forced deportation and ethnic cleansing under the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute. If the Democratic Party harbors any lingering hope of maintaining even a hollow semblance of a "moral" posture or claiming to defend an international rules-based order, it depends entirely on whether members of Congress refuse to fail this moment. The party cannot spend years decrying Donald Trump as an existential threat to democratic and human norms at home while offering passive hand-wringing or outright procedural acquiescence as his administration collaborates with Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to permanently liquidate Gaza of its native population. That cowardice is why working people across Michigan have grown utterly alienated from party leadership that preaches decency while underwriting atrocity. Statements expressing "deep concern" are worthless. I expect you to take concrete legislative action immediately: Demand enforcement of U.S. law: Invoke Section 620I of the Foreign Assistance Act and the Leahy Laws to halt all offensive weapons transfers, logistical support, and security assistance to any foreign military apparatus openly planning mass population transfer. Introduce and vote for Joint Resolutions of Disapproval on all pending arms sales and security pacts that enable the displacement infrastructure. Publicly call out the administration: Force this issue onto the floor of the House and Senate, demanding hearings on U.S. complicity in displacement coordination with third-party states. Grand Rapids and Michigan residents are watching whether our delegation will treat mass expulsion as a red line or as yet another intolerable outrage to be accommodated with silence. I await your direct response detailing what specific actions you intend to take.
