Reject the Rescission!

To: Sen. King, Rep. Pingree, Sen. Collins

From: A constituent in South Portland, ME

June 4

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the $9.4 billion rescission package recently submitted by the White House on June 3, 2025, and to urge you to reject this proposal that would cancel funding previously appropriated by Congress. This rescission package targets critical programs including $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), with $535 million cuts to both FY26 and FY27 funding, as well as significant reductions to USAID programs and other vital services. The package specifically targets global health initiatives, including a proposed $500 million cut from the $4 billion appropriated for Global Health Programs. Congress has already deliberated on and approved these appropriations through its constitutional power of the purse. These funds were allocated after careful consideration of our nation’s priorities and needs. The rescission process should not be used as a tool to circumvent or undermine Congress’s established budget decisions. The programs targeted by these cuts provide essential services to Americans and support our international commitments. Public broadcasting offers educational content and emergency information to communities across the country. USAID programs address critical global health challenges and humanitarian needs that align with America’s leadership role in the world. I respectfully remind you that appropriated funds represent promises made to the American people and our global partners. Senator Patty Murray has stated that such cuts would “set our country back decades” and make life harder for working Americans. While fiscal responsibility is important, abruptly rescinding already-appropriated funds disrupts program planning, threatens jobs, and undermines the stability of services that many Americans rely upon. There are more responsible ways to address budgetary concerns without breaking commitments already made by Congress. I urge you to honor the appropriations process by rejecting this rescission package and upholding the funding commitments Congress has already established.
