It is my understanding that the Department of Justice has requested that a federal appeals judge vacate convictions for members of two far-right groups, the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, who were found guilty of seditious conspiracy in connection with the violent January 6 Capitol attack. This is not acceptable. This is part of the Trump administration’s attempt to absolve the January 6 rioters, who illegally stormed the U.S. Capitol in 2021 to stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power. iThey were tried and convicted. To overturn those convictions now is abhorrent. The overt politicization of the DOJ is diminishing the integrity of U.S. law. The DOJ is ignoring or pardoning real crimes while prosecuting Trump’s enemies. This is dangerous, unconscionable, and frightening. Congress must help the DOJ reassert its lawful independence and focus.
