Scheduling this substance as Schedule I would eliminate access to a compound that many use as an alternative to more dangerous medications, including opioids and other high risk drugs. Available data does not support claims of standalone lethality. Reported fatalities involve multiple substances, with no clear evidence that 7-hydroxymitragynine alone is responsible. This bill would also harm small businesses across the United States that are already operating responsibly. Many companies invest heavily in third party testing, Certificates of Analysis, and transparent labeling to ensure safe, consistent products. These businesses follow existing guidelines and provide traceable, quality controlled options. H.R. 8000 would shut down compliant operators while leaving the door open for unregulated and unsafe black market products. Prohibition does not eliminate demand. It shifts it into unregulated markets, reduces product safety, and increases overall risk to consumers. A more effective approach is targeted regulation that includes age verification, mandatory testing and labeling standards, and clear manufacturing guidelines.
