Oppose KOSA and Section 230 Attacks That Threaten Free Speech

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Walberg

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

March 10

I need you to oppose the Kids Online Safety Act and any efforts to weaken Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. These policies threaten free speech and access to vital information under the guise of protection. KOSA would give the FTC authority to determine what content makes young people anxious or depressed, opening the door to censorship. Sen. Marsha Blackburn has openly stated she wants to use KOSA to target content promoting "the transgender," and the Heritage Foundation has described it as an opportunity to purge trans content from platforms. The Trump administration has already weaponized the FTC, hosting an anti-trans workshop in July to explore using agency authority against medical providers offering gender-affirming care. Weakening Section 230 would make the problem worse. Without these protections, platforms face legal liability for user content, forcing them to censor anything controversial. Smaller platforms like Bluesky and Wikipedia could shut down entirely. Kansas already passed an age verification law where state law defines "harmful to minors" to include anything depicting nonsexual "acts of homosexuality." Instead of censorship bills, push for strong privacy, antitrust, and algorithmic justice legislation that actually holds Big Tech accountable without sacrificing free speech. Queer youth and dozens of LGBTQ+ organizations have flooded Congress opposing KOSA for good reason.
