Demand House Impeachment Proceedings for Unauthorized Military Action in Mexico
To: Sen. Durbin, Sen. Duckworth
From: A constituent in Chicago, IL
February 11
I am writing to demand that you call on the House of Representatives to immediately begin impeachment proceedings against President Trump for what appears to be an unauthorized military incursion into Mexico. The FAA's unprecedented 10-day complete ground stop at El Paso International Airport, effective February 10 through February 20, designated the airspace over El Paso and nearby Santa Teresa, New Mexico as "national defense airspace" with authorization for deadly force against aircraft. This extraordinary measure, justified only by vague "special security reasons," strongly suggests military operations on or near Mexican soil.
This is not a routine security measure. The FAA has shut down all commercial flights, cargo operations, and general aviation at a major international airport serving a metropolitan area of over 680,000 people. The designation of national defense airspace with deadly force authorization is typically reserved for active combat zones or imminent military threats. The administration has provided no transparency, no congressional notification, and no justification to the American people for what appears to be a military operation that would violate Mexican sovereignty.
If this ground stop is covering unauthorized military action across our southern border, it represents a constitutional crisis. Article I, Section 8 grants Congress alone the power to declare war. Any military incursion into Mexico without congressional authorization is an impeachable offense that strikes at the heart of our constitutional system of checks and balances.
The timing coincides with the Trump administration's escalating aggression in the region, including economic warfare against Cuba through oil sanctions that has stranded American and Canadian travelers and disrupted international aviation. This pattern of unilateral executive action without congressional oversight is precisely what the impeachment power was designed to address.
I expect you to publicly call for the House to investigate this matter immediately and begin impeachment proceedings if military action in Mexico occurred without congressional authorization. The Constitution and our relationship with our closest neighbor demand accountability.
