Mental Health Providers

To: Gov. Ivey, Sen. Kitchens, Rep. Lands

From: A constituent in Huntsville, AL

December 17

Dear Governor Ivey, It has been over 2.5 years since Alabama caught up with other states in allowing clinical social workers (LICSW) to diagnose mental health conditions. Alabama Medicaid, a state-run organization, has yet to update this policy, resulting in shortages of mental health providers. Alabama has only 152 mental health providers per 100,000 people, the lowest of any state. Can you explain why a state-run agency has not updated its policies to comply with state law, and what the plan is for doing so? Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
