I live in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, in the very community Hakeem Jeffries represents. And I want to be absolutely clear: I do not support him becoming Speaker of the House.
Here in New York, we’re witnessing what a different kind of Democratic leadership can look like. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has taken the trust New Yorkers placed in him and used his power to pursue meaningful change, swiftly and unapologetically. His growing popularity reflects something national Democratic leadership seems to have forgotten: people respond to conviction, authenticity, and action.
The “Mamdani effect” is real. He has brought renewed energy and optimism to New York politics and demonstrated that progressive leadership can inspire and unite people around a shared vision. Leaders like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Claire Valdez embody that same courage. They put their principles into practice, fight for working people, and aren’t afraid to challenge the political establishment.
This is the future of the Democratic Party I want to see.
I have no confidence that Jeffries will bring that same urgency, conviction, or willingness to challenge the status quo. I fear another era of carefully rehearsed sound bites, empty platitudes, and political caution masquerading as leadership.
Democrats have squandered opportunities before. We cannot afford to regain power only to fumble it again, especially when so many Americans desperately need lasting improvements, meaningful protections, and a government willing to fight for them.
I’m not demanding ideological purity. I’m demanding leadership that recognizes the extraordinary responsibility of this moment and actually delivers.
As a Bed-Stuy resident and constituent, I want my opposition to Jeffries becoming Speaker formally registered. I believe elevating him would be a setback when the Democratic Party has an opportunity to move forward.
We need the courage to do things differently, not another chance to make the same mistakes.
