An Open Letter

To: Gov. Ivey, Rep. Fidler, Sen. Elliott

From: A constituent in Fairhope, AL

July 30

Please defend Alabamians’ digital rights from corporate censorship Hello, I am a young voter and lifelong Alabamian, I’m asking for your help in defending our rights to access legal digital content. Large payment processors like Visa and PayPal are now influencing what kinds of legal books, games, apps, and media can be sold online. In recent weeks, dozens of mature but lawful digital works were removed from platforms like Steam—not because of laws or regulations, but because payment companies threatened to pull support. This kind of private censorship is a growing danger. It bypasses democratic processes and silences creators, artists, and small businesses in Alabama and across the country. Please consider voicing public support for efforts to protect digital rights and freedom of expression—both federally and within our state. Whether through a resolution, letter of support, or legislative encouragement, Alabama should stand up for access to legal content and artistic freedom. Our laws should protect people—not private corporations—from deciding what speech is acceptable. Please help defend our digital freedoms.
