Stop ICE From Using White Nationalist Propaganda in Recruitment Campaigns

To: Rep. Landsman, Sen. Wilson, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Gov. DeWine, Pres. Trump, Rep. Mathews

From: A constituent in Lebanon, OH

January 24

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to stop the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement from using white nationalist propaganda in their recruitment campaigns on Meta and Google platforms. Reps. Becca Balint and Pramila Jayapal have documented deeply troubling recruitment practices that demand congressional intervention. Last year alone, DHS spent $2.8 million on recruitment ads across Facebook and Instagram, with an additional $500,000 since August. During just the first three weeks of a government shutdown, ICE spent $4.5 million on paid media campaigns. This massive expenditure of taxpayer dollars is being used to spread content that incorporates white nationalist rhetoric. The evidence is clear and disturbing. DHS posted recruitment material featuring the song "We'll Have Our Home Again" by Pine Tree Riots, a band whose music is popularized in neo-Nazi spaces. This is not subtle dog-whistling. This is overt use of white nationalist cultural symbols to attract recruits to a federal law enforcement agency. Federal agencies should never use extremist propaganda to build their workforce. When ICE deliberately incorporates white nationalist messaging into recruitment, it signals what kind of agents they want to hire and what kind of enforcement they intend to conduct. The consequences are already visible in constitutional violations, fatal shootings, and the targeting of legal asylum-seekers seeking emergency medical care for their children. I urge you to demand that Meta and Google immediately cease hosting these recruitment campaigns and to introduce or support legislation that prohibits federal agencies from using extremist rhetoric or imagery in any recruitment materials. Congress must also investigate how DHS approved these campaigns and hold accountable those who authorized the use of white nationalist content. Our federal law enforcement agencies must reflect our constitutional values, not the ideology of hate groups.
