I am writing to express my deep concern over recent events that threaten the very foundation of our democracy. As a constituent who values the integrity of our military and the sanctity of our Constitution, I urge you to take immediate action to protect these fundamental pillars of our nation. Recently, six Democratic lawmakers, all veterans of our armed services or intelligence community, released a video message reminding our military personnel of their duty to uphold the Constitution and refuse illegal orders. This 90-second video, posted by Senator Elissa Slotkin and featuring Senator Mark Kelly, along with Representatives Jason Crow, Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlander, and Chrissy Houlahan, was a necessary and timely reminder of the oath all service members take. In response, President Donald Trump accused these lawmakers of sedition, calling for their arrest and trial, even suggesting that their actions were "punishable by DEATH." This rhetoric is not only alarming but also fundamentally misunderstands the nature of military service and constitutional duty. It is crucial to remember that our military personnel have an obligation to reject unlawful orders. This principle is a cornerstone of military ethics and international law. While disobeying lawful orders can indeed result in punishment, following illegal orders can lead to far graver consequences, both for the individual and for our nation as a whole. I urge you to publicly reaffirm the military's obligation to uphold the Constitution above all else. Our service members need clear guidance and support in these challenging times. Furthermore, I ask that you condemn any rhetoric that threatens lawmakers for reminding military personnel of their constitutional duties. The strength of our democracy relies on the unwavering commitment of our armed forces to the Constitution, not to any individual. By taking a stand on this issue, you will be protecting not just our military but the very principles that make our nation great. Time is of the essence. With the increasing polarization in our political discourse, it is vital that we reinforce these fundamental principles now. I look forward to your prompt action and response on this critical matter.
