As a voting constituent, I am writing to strongly urge you to support the AI Guardrails Act, recently introduced by Senator Elissa Slotkin. This legislation provides essential, common-sense protections regarding how the Department of Defense (DOD) utilizes artificial intelligence in our national security framework.
While the rapid advancement of AI is critical for maintaining a competitive edge against global adversaries, it is equally vital that we establish clear "left and right limits" to protect our values, our privacy, and our safety. The AI Guardrails Act addresses three critical areas where human judgment must remain non-negotiable:
Lethal Autonomous Weapons: The bill ensures that a human being—not an algorithm—is always responsible for the decision to use lethal force. Human accountability is the cornerstone of military command and control, and we must never outsource the moral weight of life-and-death decisions to a machine.
Protecting American Privacy: By explicitly prohibiting the DOD from using AI for domestic mass surveillance, this legislation upholds the Fourth Amendment and prevents the potential for state-sponsored spying on American citizens.
Nuclear Command and Control: Perhaps most importantly, this bill mandates that the decision to launch or detonate a nuclear weapon remains exclusively with humans. In an era of increasing automation, we cannot risk accidental escalation or catastrophic errors caused by AI in our nuclear arsenal.
These safeguards are not about slowing down innovation; they are about ensuring that as we win the AI race, we do so without sacrificing the democratic principles and human oversight that define our nation.
I ask that you co-sponsor this legislation and work with your colleagues to ensure its swift passage.
