I write to express my strong support for President Trump’s tariff campaign and urge you to resist measures like the Trade Review Act that would restrict his negotiating authority in our ongoing trade confrontation with China. In any negotiation, the party that demonstrates unwavering commitment typically prevails. As experts note, “Who will blink first depends on who can stand more pain and who is better prepared”. By maintaining a united front, we substantially strengthen America’s position at the negotiating table. Your concerns about economic impacts are valid and respected. The Wharton School projects tariffs may affect GDP and wages, and previous tariffs caused significant losses for American producers. However, these short-term challenges must be weighed against the strategic imperative of correcting decades of unfair trade practices that have disadvantaged American workers. This is a rare opportunity for bipartisan cooperation. Both Republicans and Democrats recognize the economic challenges China poses to American interests. Your collective wisdom and experience are invaluable, but limiting the President’s trade authority during active negotiations signals division that our adversaries will exploit. President Trump has already indicated flexibility, stating tariffs will “come down substantially, but it won’t be zero”. This demonstrates these measures are part of a negotiation strategy rather than permanent policy. By allowing this process to work, you give America the strongest chance of securing favorable terms. I respectfully suggest focusing your considerable talents on crafting targeted relief for affected industries while maintaining our overall strategic position. Your constituents will ultimately benefit more from improved trade terms than from short-term protections that sacrifice negotiating leverage. The eyes of history are upon us. Will America project unity and strength, or division and hesitation? I trust you will choose the path that best serves our long-term national interests.
