The Israeli military's deliberate targeting of medical facilities and personnel in Gaza is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and human rights. The abduction of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and hundreds of other hospital staff and patients from the Kamal Adwan Hospital, following months of bombardment and a complete siege, is an appalling crime. Israel's actions, including the assassination of Dr. Abu Safiya's son and the critical injury inflicted upon him, constitute collective punishment against the Palestinian civilian population. The detention and torture of medical workers like Dr. Abu Safiya and the late Dr. Adnan al-Bursh are unconscionable acts that undermine the right to healthcare. The utter disregard for the lives and well-being of civilians, including the injured and sick, is a violation of the fundamental principles of the Geneva Conventions. Israel's unsubstantiated claims of affiliation with Hamas do not justify these egregious actions against medical professionals sworn to protect life. The United States must use its influence to demand the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all detained medical staff and patients. It must also ensure the reopening of the Kamal Adwan Hospital and the provision of necessary aid and supplies to treat the victims of Israel's horrific assault on Gaza's healthcare system. Failure to act would be a dereliction of duty and a tacit endorsement of Israel's war crimes.
