Congress must take action to prevent unauthorized and unjustified military invasions or territorial seizures. The proposed legislation, H.R. 1936, seeks to prohibit funds for the U.S. Armed Forces from engaging in operations to invade or seize territory from Canada, Panama, or the self-governing territory of Greenland. This is a crucial measure to uphold principles of sovereignty, avoid escalating international tensions, and ensure our military resources are directed responsibly. The United States has no legal or moral grounds to violate the territorial integrity of neighboring nations through military force. Such actions would undermine diplomatic relations, violate international laws and norms, and could potentially spark wider conflicts. Restraining the military from these aggressive overreaches safeguards our position as a nation committed to peace and reinforces our respect for the self-determination of other peoples. Furthermore, diverting funds towards unprovoked invasions or annexations wastes precious resources that could be better allocated to genuine defense priorities or to address pressing domestic needs. We must exercise judicious oversight to prevent abuse of military force purely for territorial gain. Enacting this legislation upholds our core values as a democratic society. I urge you to support this bill as a crucial step in reaffirming our commitment to global stability, sovereignty, and the prudent use of military power.
