Americans Deserve Facts, Accountability, and Congressional Oversight Congress must reassert its constitutional authority over a conflict the White House is managing inconsistently and without clear public accountability — at direct cost to the American people. U.S. gas prices have risen by more than a dollar per gallon since the conflict began, reaching their highest national average since 2022. Americans are paying that price while their government still cannot clearly articulate a consistent objective or strategy for ending this conflict. The administration has suggested Iran’s public statements cannot be trusted. That may be true. But the President’s own public statements have also shifted repeatedly, while criticism and factual questioning are met with hostility rather than clarity. When New York Times correspondent David Sanger questioned President Donald Trump aboard Air Force One about whether the campaign had achieved its stated objectives, the President reportedly called him “treasonous” and a “fake guy.” The underlying questions remain legitimate: important uncertainties remain about the status of Iran’s enriched nuclear material, and Iran continues to exert significant influence over the Strait of Hormuz. Attacking journalists does not resolve those issues. The administration’s own public messaging has also been inconsistent regarding negotiations, military objectives, and the broader path forward. Independent reporting and fact-checking organizations have documented multiple contradictions and reversals in official statements related to this conflict. That instability only increases the need for congressional oversight. I urge you to use every available legislative tool — including the War Powers Resolution, AUMF oversight authority, and formal hearings — to impose accountability and ensure that any continued military engagement or negotiated settlement receives meaningful congressional review. That is Congress’s constitutional responsibility, and the moment to exercise it is now.
