Thorough review needed for anti-terrorism tax-exempt legislation

To: Rep. Stevens, Sen. Stabenow, Sen. Peters

From: A verified voter in West Bloomfield, MI

November 15

I'm calling on Representative Haley Stevens to reject HR 9495. As the bill currently stands, it would give the executive branch new powers that are ripe for abuse to unilaterally revoke the tax-exempt status of organizations deemed to be providing "material support" to terrorist groups. This dangerously vague language could enable the targeting of civil society groups, human rights advocates, and others critical of US foreign policy under the guise of combating terrorism. Stripping tax-exempt status without due process violates core constitutional protections and threatens to chill free speech and dissent. I urge Representative Stevens to oppose this assault on civil liberties unless it is substantially amended to include robust judicial oversight, clear definitions of key terms, and strong safeguards against political retaliation or overreach by future administrations.
