Decades of industrial agriculture practices have destroyed our soils, accelerated climate change, and decimated the health of our communities, local economies, and family farms. Farmers and ranchers can steward the land, but have been encouraged to farm in ways that degrade it, reducing our resilience to disastrous weather events and supply chain shocks. Americans are facing the impacts: increased food costs, water scarcity, declining health, and costly damages due to droughts, floods, and more. It is time to hold Congress accountable for solutions. Regenerative agriculture is a key solution for our climate, health, and water crises, and the 2024 Farm Bill is the opportunity! The farm bill governs the way our food is produced, distributed, and consumed. Costing taxpayers $100 billion each year, the current system props up the same industrial agriculture system that led us to health and climate crises by supporting commodities over communities. Regenerative agriculture combines Indigenous knowledge, holistic management, and cutting edge science, to work within the context of natural systems. It means healthier soils growing healthier foods, stronger local communities, more profitable regional economies, and more resilient environments. We are calling on Congress to provide federal support for regenerative agriculture so that we can scale the transition to 100 million more acres under regeneration by 2030. With the right support, like technical assistance and access to land, more of us can transition to regenerative practices that rebuild healthy soil, leading to: Sequestered carbon and reduced greenhouse gasses; Increased biodiversity; Improved water quality and availability; Land that is resilient to droughts, flooding, and extreme weather events; Reduced input costs and improved farmer livelihoods; and, Reduced chemical usage and more nutritious food.
