Stop Profiteering off the Presidency
To: Sen. King, Rep. Pingree, Sen. Collins
From: A constituent in South Portland, ME
August 7
I am writing to express my deep concern over the ongoing financial entanglements, conflicts of interest, and apparent monetization of the presidency under President Donald Trump’s administration. These practices are undermining the integrity of the office and eroding public faith in our democratic institutions. I respectfully call on you to convene immediate hearings into these matters and to strengthen legal safeguards to prevent profiteering from high public office. Since returning to the White House, President Trump has continued to use public service for his private enrichment. Some alarming examples demanding urgent oversight include: • Pay-for-Access Fundraisers at Trump Properties: President Trump has hosted high-dollar donor events and private meetings at Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster since returning to office. Packages reportedly range into the millions for direct, often private access to the president. These events benefit his privately-owned clubs financially, raising serious ethics concerns about selling influence from within official office. • Trump-Branded Cryptocurrencies and NFTs: The president has actively promoted digital assets like the “MAGA Coin” and “Trump Coin,” while affiliated entities reportedly retained large stakes in these tokens. Public endorsement by the sitting president has inflated their value—profiting insiders and potentially Trump-connected wallets. Such speculative branding raises profound conflicts of interest when it intersects with federal crypto policy still under active development by the administration. • Large Crypto Donations to MAGA Inc. During Federal Regulatory Debates: President Trump’s political committees—particularly MAGA Inc.—have received tens of millions from cryptocurrency industry donors in recent months, including individuals and firms facing regulatory scrutiny. These donations coincide with legislative and executive deliberations over the regulatory treatment of digital assets, raising legitimate concerns about pay-to-play shaping policy. I urge Congress to: 1. Launch formal hearings on financial conflicts of interest in the current presidency, including Trump’s private-sector entanglements. 2. Enact enforceable laws to prohibit presidents and their families from personally profiting from events, endorsements, or commercial partnerships while in office. 3. Require real-time financial transparency for officeholders’ businesses and PAC-related fundraising activities. 4. Strengthen ethics enforcement mechanisms to avoid reliance on voluntary norms. Americans deserve a government that serves the people and upholds the Constitution—not one that leverages elected office for private profit.
