I need you to support comprehensive legislation that restricts how tech companies collect, use, and share our personal data. The current system allows corporations to amass surveillance capabilities that would make any authoritarian state jealous. Google collects everything: my search history, emails, location via GPS and nearby cell towers, voice commands, browsing activity across third-party sites, and even which Bluetooth devices are near me. Meta tracks who I communicate with, how long I spend on their platforms, and my activity across the web through cookies. They then sell this information to advertisers and share it with researchers and law enforcement. Companies that rely on advertising revenue collect exponentially more data than those with other business models, and they use it to predict and manipulate human behavior. Data that can predict the future concentrates power in the hands of a few corporations. Being able to consistently predict the future and nudge the future you desire into existence brings you within steps of being a god. Do not allow massive corporations to enslave humanity in the sole pursuit of "number go up." Apple proves that a major tech company can function while collecting minimal data and refusing to share it for marketing. We need federal privacy laws that make their approach the standard, not the exception. Please watch Pantheon (2022), Ghost in the Shell (1995), and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022). Is this a world we want to create? One of massive inequality and oppression, binding the human condition with surveillance and corruption? I don't want this world. You shouldn't either. Reach down into your soul and start putting down appropriate guardrails. We are fast approaching the world these series attempt to warn us against.
