Demand Accountability for ICE Killing of Renee Nicole Good and End Militarized Operations

January 8

On Wednesday morning at 10:25 local time, ICE agents shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on Portland Avenue in Minneapolis. Good was a mother of three and an award-winning poet who, according to the Minneapolis City Council, was simply caring for her neighbors when she was killed. Eyewitness Emily Heller told CNN that an agent stepped in front of Good's moving vehicle and shot her point blank through her windshield in the face. The federal government's characterization of this incident as defensive action against domestic terrorism contradicts both eyewitness accounts and video evidence showing agents approaching Good's maroon SUV as it attempted to leave. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey stated the agent acted recklessly, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the federal account a propaganda machine. This shooting of an American citizen occurred approximately one mile from where George Floyd was murdered in 2020, and it has sparked protests across the country. The Trump administration has deployed approximately 2,000 additional federal agents to Minneapolis in recent weeks, representing one of the largest concentrations of Department of Homeland Security personnel in a US city in recent years. This militarized presence has created an atmosphere of fear so severe that Minneapolis Public Schools cancelled classes for the rest of the week due to safety concerns after federal agents reportedly made arrests outside a high school. American citizens should not fear being shot by federal agents in their own neighborhoods. The deployment of thousands of ICE agents into Minneapolis has transformed immigration enforcement into an occupation that threatens the safety of all residents, regardless of citizenship status. I urge you to demand a full independent investigation into Renee Nicole Good's killing, hold the responsible agents accountable, and work to immediately scale back this dangerous militarization of our communities. Federal law enforcement must operate with transparency and respect for human life, not as an occupying force that shoots first and justifies later.
