Alarm Over Trump’s Comments on Military Force Toward Canada and Greenland

To: Sen. Warren, Rep. Neal, Sen. Markey

From: A constituent in Westfield, MA

May 4

I am writing to express profound concern over recent comments made by former President Donald Trump during an interview with journalist Kristen Welker. When asked if he would rule out using military force to take Canada, Trump replied, “I don’t think we’ll ever get to that point.” He then added, “It could happen with Greenland.” These remarks are deeply disturbing. Even if made flippantly, the suggestion that the United States might consider military action against one of our closest allies—or any peaceful nation—should be treated with the utmost seriousness and urgency. Words from public figures, especially former presidents and current candidates, carry weight. They influence public sentiment, international relations, and global perceptions of our nation’s values. Suggesting military force as an option toward Canada—a democratic neighbor and NATO partner—is reckless and offensive. Adding Greenland to the mix only further trivializes the gravity of using military power and sends a dangerous message about how future leaders may view diplomacy and sovereignty. The United States must remain a leader in promoting peace, cooperation, and mutual respect. I urge you to speak out publicly and unequivocally against this kind of rhetoric. Our allies—and the American people—deserve reassurance that our democracy does not condone threats of violence as a tool of foreign policy. Thank you for your time, and for your continued defense of constitutional principles, democratic values, and international peace.
