President Trump claims to have struck Iran under the 1973 War Powers Act which gives the president authority to attack another country if there is an urgent threat. We haven’t heard the nature of the urgency of the threat posed by Iran. We haven’t heard a good reason for him taking the initiative without asking Congress to declare war. It’s clear that by striking without the go ahead from Congress that he may have gain a certain degree of element of surprise, but the urgency has not been explained. We know that he met privately with selected members of Congress in advance. All we know of that meeting is Senator Schumer’s comments that the American people should be included in such decisions. One can only infer that the senator was not convinced the urgency was sufficient to invoke the War Powers Act. I looks to me like President Trump misused his powers under the Constitution he swore to uphold. I’d like to know what my congressional representatives think. Did President Trump act illegally? Were his actions impeachable? If so when is the best time to impeach? After the midterm elections? Is it worth impeaching without a quorum in the Senate that will convict? What is your response? As always, thank you for your service.
