Congress must immediately place a moratorium on AI data centers until sensible regulations are in place. Google's proposed Van Buren Township facility, requiring 2.7 gigawatts of power from DTE Energy, demonstrates exactly why we cannot allow this industry to expand unchecked.
These facilities drain our freshwater resources, overload power systems, and increase fossil fuel consumption. The air pollution from the additional energy generation threatens public health across southeast Michigan. Residents near these centers also face constant noise pollution that disrupts daily life.
The scale of Google's energy demand alone shows this industry is developing faster than our infrastructure and environmental protections can handle. We're sacrificing our water, our air quality, and our health so tech companies can expand their AI operations without accountability. Michigan communities should not bear these costs while corporations profit.
Stop approving new AI data centers now. Establish comprehensive regulations that protect our water supplies, require renewable energy sources, mandate noise controls, and assess health impacts before any new facilities break ground. Our environment and our communities deserve better than being treated as expendable resources for Big Tech.
