I am writing to you as a resident of this state to demand immediate, decisive action to protect our community from the increasingly violent and lawless actions of federal agents operating within our borders. The recent tragedy in Minneapolis—the killing of U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good—proves that federal agencies like ICE are now operating as a paramilitary force with total disregard for the lives and constitutional rights of our people.
When federal agents enter our neighborhoods, unmasked and without coordination with local law enforcement, and commit acts of violence against our residents, the State has a moral and legal obligation to intervene. We cannot allow our state to be treated as occupied territory.
I am calling on you to use the full power of your office to:
1. Fully Prosecute Federal Officers: Any federal agent who harms or kills a resident of this state must be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of state law. A federal badge is not a license to commit murder. I demand that our State Attorney General and local District Attorneys treat these incidents as the violent crimes they are.
2. Protect the Right to Protest: Our residents must be able to exercise their First Amendment rights and act as legal observers without fear of being targeted or killed by federal "surge" teams. I urge you to deploy state resources to ensure the safety of protestors and observers from federal interference.
3. Non-Cooperation and Resistance: I demand that you prohibit all state and local resources, including personnel and data, from being used to assist in these federal "occupations." Our tax dollars should not be used to facilitate the terrorizing of our own neighbors.
4. Enforce State Sovereignty: If the federal government refuses to restrain its agents, the State must take physical and legal steps to prevent these agencies from conducting high-risk, uncoordinated operations in our residential areas.
The safety of our families and the integrity of our laws are at stake. If the federal government has abandoned the Constitution, the State must become the final line of defense for the rights of its people.
I expect to see a public commitment from your office to hold federal agents accountable for any violence committed on our soil.
