Oppose HR9495

To: Sen. Cantwell, Rep. Strickland, Sen. Murray

From: A constituent in Olympia, WA

November 17

I strongly urge you to oppose H.R. 9495, the deceptively named "Upholding the Sovereignty of the States Against Federal Overreach Act." This harmful legislation threatens the very existence of nonprofit organizations, including religious and advocacy groups, by allowing states to override federal laws protecting tax-exempt status. It undermines decades of well-established laws and court rulings upholding the rights of these vital organizations. Nonprofits play a crucial role in our society, providing essential services, advocating for important causes, and fostering civic engagement. Stripping them of their tax-exempt status would devastate their ability to operate and serve their communities effectively. This bill represents an unacceptable infringement on free speech and freedom of association, core principles enshrined in our Constitution. Furthermore, the implications of this bill extend far beyond just nonprofits. It sets a dangerous precedent of states overriding federal laws, potentially leading to a patchwork of conflicting regulations and undermining national unity. Such a drastic departure from our nation's legal framework and traditions must be firmly rejected. I implore you to stand up for the rights of all Americans and vote against H.R. 9495. Protecting the vital work of nonprofits and upholding the rule of law should be a top priority for our elected representatives. This misguided legislation poses an existential threat to the vibrant nonprofit sector and must be stopped.
