Pass Universal Healthcare — End Employer-Tied Coverage Now

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Pres. Trump, Rep. Friedman

From: A constituent in Los Angeles, CA

August 23

Pass universal healthcare legislation. The current system, which chains millions of people to jobs they can't afford to leave because losing coverage would be catastrophic, is not a healthcare system — it's a hostage situation. Every year, people skip diagnoses, ration medication, and go bankrupt over medical bills, not because care doesn't exist, but because their employer decided what plan they get, or whether they get one at all. No other wealthy country does this. Healthcare tied to employment means a layoff, a divorce, or a career change can strip a family of coverage overnight. That's not a personal failure — that's a policy failure. I want you to champion universal healthcare, whether that's a single-payer system or a robust public option that genuinely competes with private insurers. Half-measures that leave the employer-based structure intact are not solutions. The time to act is now.
