For the sake of our non-profits, please veto/reconsider HR 9495!

To: Rep. Schrier, Sen. Cantwell, Sen. Murray

From: A verified voter in Covington, WA

November 11

This bill would grant the Treasury Secretary sweeping and unchecked powers to unilaterally revoke the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit organization deemed to support terrorism, without due process or requiring any evidence to be provided. While the goal of combating terrorism financing is noble, stripping constitutional protections and allowing the arbitrary targeting of civil society groups is a dangerous overreach that undermines democratic values. I urge you to veto this legislation and send it back to committee for revisions that add substantive due process protections, evidentiary requirements, and robust oversight measures. Unchecked authority of this magnitude invites abuse and could be wielded as a political weapon against dissenting voices and ideological opponents. Nonprofits play a vital role in our society, and their ability to operate freely should not be curtailed without just cause and fair proceedings. I encourage revisiting this bill to strike a balance between national security and civil liberties.
