The United States is facing an unprecedented assault on its democratic foundations. The President's repeated refusal to respect the rule of law, disregard for judicial authority, and attempts to unconstitutionally expand executive power represent a direct threat to the system of checks and balances enshrined in the Constitution. No person, even the President, is above the law in this country. Congress must uphold its sworn duty to defend the Constitution by exercising its power to remove the President from office through impeachment and conviction. Failing to do so would enable the consolidation of autocratic powers and the subversion of America's republican form of government. The very foundations of our democracy are at stake – prompt congressional action to restore constitutional order is imperative.
