Oppose Extrajudicial Killings in Drug Enforcement

To: Sen. King, Sen. Collins

From: A constituent in South Portland, ME

October 15, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern over recent discussions about employing extrajudicial killings as a method of combating drug trafficking. Such an approach is not only morally reprehensible but fundamentally un-American, undermining the very principles of justice and due process upon which our nation was founded. Our Constitution guarantees every individual the right to due process, regardless of the crimes they are accused of committing. This cornerstone of our legal system ensures that all citizens are treated fairly and protects against arbitrary punishment. Endorsing extrajudicial killings would be a dangerous departure from these essential values, potentially leading us down a slippery slope where the rule of law is replaced by vigilantism and state-sanctioned murder. Moreover, such tactics have been proven ineffective in addressing the root causes of drug trafficking and addiction. Countries that have implemented similar harsh measures, such as the Philippines under President Duterte, have not seen a significant reduction in drug-related crimes. Instead, these policies have led to widespread human rights abuses and a breakdown of trust between communities and law enforcement. As my representative, I urge you to take a strong stance against any proposals that advocate for extrajudicial killings or other extreme measures in drug enforcement. Instead, I ask that you support evidence-based approaches to addressing drug-related issues, including increased funding for addiction treatment programs, community-based prevention initiatives, and reforms to our criminal justice system that prioritize rehabilitation over punishment. We must remember that the strength of our nation lies not in how harshly we punish offenders, but in how fairly and justly we uphold our laws. By rejecting extrajudicial killings and reaffirming our commitment to due process, we can work towards more effective and humane solutions to the complex issues surrounding drug trafficking and addiction. I look forward to hearing your position on this critical matter and the steps you plan to take to ensure that our drug enforcement policies align with American values and constitutional principles.
