Maintain funding for vital public broadcasting services

To: Sen. Duckworth, Sen. Durbin, Rep. Davis

From: A constituent in Chicago, IL

June 11

Public media plays a vital role in providing educational, informative, and local programming that serves communities across the nation, especially in rural and underserved areas. Cutting federal funding for public broadcasters like PBS, NPR, and their local stations would undermine their ability to fulfill this crucial mission. These outlets offer trustworthy journalism, educational content for children, and emergency information during crises - services that commercial media often overlook or cannot adequately provide in many regions. Furthermore, public broadcasting enjoys broad public support and has been a reliable source of nonpartisan, fact-based reporting for decades. Defunding these institutions based on allegations of partisan bias would be a disservice to the millions of Americans who rely on them for quality programming and unbiased news. Rather than eliminating funding, we should maintain and strengthen public media to ensure all citizens have access to reliable information, educational resources, and local programming that enriches their communities. This funding is a wise investment in preserving an essential public service that upholds democracy and empowers the public with knowledge.
